GROSSMAN, ISADOR

GROSSMAN, ISADOR (13 July 1880-29 Sept. 1957), attorney and senior partner of McAfee, Grossman, Taplin, Hanning, Newcomer & Hazlett, established legal principles regarding the taxation of river boats and advocated flexible lease payments based on dollar fluctuations. Born in St. Ivan, Hungary to Jacob and Louisa Farkasch Grossman, Grossman attended public schools in Cleveland and graduated from CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. He received both an A.B. (1902) and an L.L.B. (1904) from Harvard University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Admitted to the bar that year, Grossman first entered practice with Judge A. W. Lamson (1904-06). He then went into partnership with Henry B. Howells (Howells & Grossman, 1906-19). He spent the next 6 years with Niman, Grossman, Buss & Holliday, which became Holliday, Grossman, & McAfee, the forerunner of McAfee, Grossman, Taplin, Hanning, Newcomer & Hazlett.

Grossman participated in the LEGAL AID SOCIETY (which he helped found) and the CLEVELAND BAR ASSOCIATION, and served on the executive committees of the National Policy Association and the CLEVELAND COUNCIL ON WORLD AFFAIRS. He was secretary and director of Chandler Motor Car (later the CHANDLER-CLEVELAND MOTORS CORPORATION), and director of the Grossman Drug Company, the Merit Pharmacal Company, the Cragin Realty Company, and the Page Realty Company. Grossman also was a trustee of the TEMPLE, the Jewish Welfare Federation (see FEDERATION OF JEWISH CHARITIES), the Mt. Sinai Hospital Foundation (see MT. SINAI MEDICAL CENTER), MEDICAL MUTUAL OF CLEVELAND, the Council Educational Alliance and CAMP WISE, among others. He belonged to the CLEVELAND CITY CLUB and the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce.

On 9 Jan. 1911 Grossman married Adele Seasongood in St. Louis, MO; they had 2 sons, James S. and Edward N.
