For the last 110 years, The Best American Short Stories has arrived faithfully each October to remind us of the pleasures of short fiction. The 2025 edition is already notable: longtime series editor Heidi Pitlor has handed over the reins to her successor, Nicole A. Lamy, and this year’s guest editor, Celeste Ng (author of Little Fires Everywhere), is a 1988 Shaker Heights graduate. Together, we’ll read their selections with the goal of discovering commonalities, reflecting on differences, and discussing what these stories—collectively—say about life in America in the 21st century.
