Abstract
Prostate cancer and its treatment negatively affect bothpatients and their partners. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed toevaluate the efficacy of the “Prostate Cancer Education & Resources forCouples” (PERC) eHealth intervention in improving health outcomes for patientsand their partners. This two-armed RCT enrolled 280 dyads (560 individuals) oflocalized prostate cancer patients who had recently completed treatment andtheir partners. Dyads were randomized to either the PERC (n=141 dyads) or theNational Cancer Institute’s prostate cancer website attention control groups (NCI,n=139 dyads). Participants in both groups completed validated questionnaires onquality of life and symptom measures at baseline and at 4, 8, and 12 monthspost-baseline. Research assistants conducting surveys remained blinded to therandomization.

A total of 221 dyads completed the 12-month follow-up survey(PERC=106 dyads, NCI=115 dyads). We used multilevel linear mixed models toachieve the research objectives. We found the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy General Scale totalscores and subdomains did not differ significantly between the PERC and NCIcontrol groups for patients or partners across time. Patients in the PERC groupreported lower fatigue and pain across time. Partners in the PERC groupreported lower depression across time. The findings suggest that PERC may helpreduce fatigue and pain in patients and reduce depression in partners duringthe post treatment transition.
