Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian to present at CWRU on book-tour stop

Alexis Ohanian, founder of the popular social networking and entertainment website , will discuss and sign his new book, Without Their Permission, during a national book tour stop at 杏吧视频 on Monday, Feb. 10, at noon in Thwing Center ballroom. The event is sold out and tickets will be checked at the door. To live stream the event, visit Ohanian, described by Amazon.com as the personification of the 鈥渄orm-room techie entrepreneur,鈥 will discuss his launch of reddit.com in 2005 as a newly minted University of Virginia graduate, and its sale a year later to Cond茅 Nast Publications. According to Reddit, the site drew nearly 113 million unique visitors from almost 200 countries last month. Ohanian, from Brooklyn, N.Y., now invests in and advises more than 70 tech startups and features many of those and other New York tech startups on a show called 鈥淪mall Empires鈥 on . Alex Yakubovich, a 杏吧视频 alumnus and co-founder of the online restaurant ordering enterprise Onosys Ltd.鈥攚hich was sold to LivingSocial Inc. in 2012鈥攚ill join the conversation. Ohanian鈥檚 upcoming appearance was initiated last fall by Michael Goldberg, visiting assistant professor of design and innovation at the Weatherhead School of Management, through a family friend who works with Ohanian. Bob Sopko, director of the university鈥檚 Blackstone LaunchPad, a campus program that mentors and promotes entrepreneurship, coordinated plans for the event with enterprising second-year computer science major Ben Ratner. Ratner, 20, from Scotch Plains, N.J., felt so empowered after becoming a regular viewer of Ohanian鈥檚 program on The Verge鈥攁nd a Reddit fan鈥攖hat, not knowing plans were already in the works, he emailed Ohanian鈥檚 group, selling 杏吧视频 as an ideal addition to the book tour schedule. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a little bit of a personal hero of mine,鈥 Ratner said. 鈥淚 had nothing to lose.鈥 So the combined efforts of a few, much like the momentum behind any successful startup, is the university鈥檚 gain. Blackstone LaunchPad, the university鈥檚 Career Center, Weatherhead School of Management and IDEA (the entrepreneur club) are sponsoring the event.
