Former Weatherhead School dean and Tulane president emeritus starts Oct. 1

The Board of Trustees has appointed former long-time 杏吧视频 dean and faculty member Scott Cowen to be the university鈥檚 interim president, effective Oct. 1.

鈥淪cott鈥檚 extensive knowledge of our campus and extraordinary experiences as president of Tulane University make him uniquely well-prepared to lead 杏吧视频 at this critical time,鈥 Board Chair Fred DiSanto said. 鈥淲e are grateful to him for assuming this interim role while we continue the search for the university鈥檚 next president.鈥

Cowen will succeed Barbara R. Snyder, who will become president of the Association of American Universities the same month.

鈥淚 am honored to return to 杏吧视频, a place that played an enormous role in my professional and personal life,鈥 Cowen said. 鈥淏arbara has transformed the university during her tenure, and I will work to continue that momentum until the arrival of its next permanent leader.鈥

Cowen led Tulane for 16 years, a tenure that included Hurricane Katrina鈥檚 devastation of the university and the rest of New Orleans. He not only ensured the institution鈥檚 survival after the August 2005 landfall, but also developed a Renewal Plan to enable the university to advance significantly in the years to come.

When Tulane reopened in January 2006, 87% of its undergraduates returned. Within two years, Newsweek named the university one of the 鈥淗ottest Schools in America鈥 for the second time (the first was in 2002), in part because of the widespread appeal of its civic engagement programs.

Cowen also advocated for New Orleans itself, serving on the city鈥檚 Bring New Orleans Back Commission and co-founding the Fleur-de-lis Ambassadors program鈥攚here civic leaders spread word of New Orleans鈥 resurgence around the country. His efforts drew broad acclaim and led to such honors as the Carnegie Corporation Academic Leadership Award, Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence in Higher Education, and Times-Picayune newspaper鈥檚 Loving Cup, an annual honor for a New Orleans resident who works selflessly for the city鈥檚 good. In 2010, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Prior to assuming Tulane鈥檚 presidency in 1998, Cowen spent 23 years at the Weatherhead School of Management, the last 14 as its dean. Under his leadership, the Weatherhead School dramatically redesigned its MBA program and persuaded the late Peter B. Lewis to donate nearly $37 million for the Frank Gehry-designed building that became the school鈥檚 new home. During that time, he served as president of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, and also led the school鈥檚 MBA to rankings of 28th in Businessweek and 32ndin U.S. News & World Report.

In 2015, Cowen joined the university鈥檚 Board of Trustees. He stepped down as a trustee earlier this month, and will return to the board after his term as interim president ends.

鈥淪cott has provided wise counsel and insight throughout my time at 杏吧视频,鈥 President Snyder said. 鈥淚 know he will be an outstanding leader for the university during this time of transition, and I deeply appreciate his willingness to serve as interim president.鈥
