Presenter: Elizabeth Benninger, Ph.D., ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ
Topic: This presentation draws on social determinants of health literature to frame the ways in which youth (ages 14-17) experience historical disadvantage within the neighborhood and how this influences their health outcomes. Elizabeth Benninger reports on findings from a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) case study with 14 African American youth in Cleveland, Ohio to argue that racial discrimination shapes the social determinants of health, which in turn, contributes towards disparities in child health outcomes across their life course.
Elizabeth Benninger PhD, is a post-doctoral research fellow at ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ. Her research focuses on national and international collaborations which specifically aim to promote the health and well-being of children and families within communities experiencing high levels of poverty and violence.
