Today we're welcoming our newest student intern, Zhongyu Ma, to the Center. Take a moment to learn more about his path to the Swetland Center in the interview below.
What is your role and what projects will you be working on?
I will be working on the REACH project and other projects relevant to my field practicum, I
aim to bring diverse perspectives and community insights to various projects, evaluate
implementation models, and enhance policy effectiveness.
Where are you from?
I come from the Northwestern part of China, Lanzhou, the beginning of the Silk Road. I've lived here since birth until I graduated from college. This city bears a strong resemblance to Cleveland, both having thrived during the nation's heavy industrial boom. Now, it too is undergoing economic transformation. I love my city; eventually, I will be back.
What is your background?
My background is in social work, with experience in community practice, international development, and qualitative research. I have been involved in projects related to post-disaster recovery, community needs assessment, and evidence-based program evaluation.
What excites you about joining the Swetland Center?
The Swetland Center provides an opportunity to learn how professionals in the United States advocate for policy justice and promote equity through community-based work. Coming from China, where social and cultural systems are different, I hope to understand these approaches and integrate cross-cultural perspectives into social work practice. With a background in community practice, international development, and research, I am interested in how evidence-based strategies can address social and environmental determinants of health and advance equitable outcomes.
What is your favorite outdoor space in Cleveland or a place you want to explore?
Edgewater Park is a great place to see the sunset and take photos. Maybe I want to explore the Cavaliers' home ground; it's the only thing I knew before I applied to CWRU.
Is there a piece of advice have you been given or a quote/statement that is significant to you?
Two statements are significant to me:
- "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." - Carl Rogers
- "Here is Rhodes, jump here." - Aesop
