Graduation Spotlight: Rucha Batchu

Rucha Batchu

Major: Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering

Why did you choose this area of study?

It seemed like a good way to combine creativity with hard technical knowledge and I thought it would be fun.

What is your favorite thing about engineering?

Finding good solutions to niche problems. I've also found I really like the process of designing and creating new products for people. Also I know too many facts about windmills because of my classwork and it's fun being able to randomly tell them to people.

Why did you choose CWRU?

I really liked the idea of think[box] and the fact that you weren't limited to taking classes in your major of study. I do enjoy engineering but I also am very into creating art and comics.

Were you involved in activities outside of class?

I've been the Mechanical Lead of CWRUbotix Mate ROV (CWRU underwater robotics club), I've been a think[box] 3rd Floor Technician & Programming Assistant, and I've been a TA for ENGR 130. I've also been to a few WISER and SWE volunteer events when I can. I just like doing a lot of things and exploring a little bit of everything. I never thought I'd like working with people as much as I do but through just doing a bunch of different things, I found out I do.

What's your thing about CWRU, or favorite memory?

I love the variety of people I've met here and I love making random things at think[box]. Through trial and error, I now know the biggest possible size of Benchy you can make on the Ultimakers there (down to the 0.1mm). It's nice to have a community of nerds around you.

What advice/encouragement would you like to share with current students?

Make sure to have fun, both with your academics and extracurriculars. Yes, getting good grades is important, but real learning happens when you have fun with what you're doing and put in effort beyond the minimum.

What are your plans after graduation?

I have a full-time job in product design in Michigan!
